Hi Steve, this Century 1.5 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate Motor - B2858 will be a perfect replacement motor for the old motor on your WF-6 WhisperFlo pump.    We recommend getting a Tune-Up Kit so you have new o-rings and a new motor shaft seal for a leak-free installation.

I need to replace a Pentair 34009 (AKA 196239) 1.5 hp pump motor, used for a fountain. I am in California. The replacement motor suggested on your site (# B2854) says "not California compliant". Can you still ship this item to CA? Or do you have something equivalent that IS California compliant?

Hi Hank, you can use either this Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2982 or this V-Green 1.65 HP Square Flange 48Y Variable Speed Motor - ECM16SQU as a California Title 20-compliant motor.  Note that both motors require 230 volts to operate, so be sure you have the correct power to your equipment pad.

Yes, the B858 (B2858) is the correct replacement for your Pentair 168454 motor. You have a 2HP uprated motor. This 1.5HP full rated motor has a total HP rating of 2.25.

The motor recommended has a total HP of 2.25 and your motor is 2.20THP. The impeller determines the GPM you will not change the impeller when using the recommended motor. If you prefer, we offer the Century 2.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Up Rate Motor - B2859 that has the same total HP as your current. I have a Pentair WhisperFlo with a motor that is model BPA450V1. It is really noisy still even after replacing the motor bearings. The pump is supposed to be a quiet pump, but even after replacing the motor bearings, its still just as loud as before. Is this the correct replacement motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/9/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Craig C.

Hello Aaron.  The Century Motors model B2858 is a Full Rate motor with a Total Horse Power (THP) of 2.25.  Your current motor model BPA450V1 has a THP of 1.65.  The Century Motors model B2854 is a more exact replacement and has a THP of 1.65.  It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser o-ring be replaced at the same time.  The GOKIT 32 contains these parts.  When replacing the motor please check the impeller for wear or obstruction.  An out of balance or obstructed impeller can result in significant noise.  Century 1.5 HP Square Flange 56Y Up Rate Motor - B2854    Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32

I purchased a new Century Centurion CAT B2858 motor from InyoPools last month. My old pump had a mount on the exterior for the heavy duty ground cable (I believe it is called bonding). However, this new Century Centurion pump does not have a mount anywhere for the bond cable. Is it required?

Hi Paul, yes these motors do have the bonding lug and are located beneath the rear cap on the motor. These are usually required to be attached per local code but you may want to double-check with your local code.

Hi Scott, Thanks for the photos those are helpful! The motor that is currently on your pump SQ1152 is a replacement motor and was not the original motor on the pump. The SQ1152 is a 48 Frame motor which has a little narrower diameter as you can see there is a little bit of a gap between the bottom of the black motor and the motor mounting foot. The 56 Frame motor listed on this page is the original motor that came with your pump and would sit flush on the motor mounting foot. We would suggest this B858 as the proper replacement.

A  Answered on 5/15/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Charlie R.

Dan, To calculate the total horsepower the motor has, you have to multiply the horsepower (HP) by the service factor (SF) rating on the motor label. In this case, the hp is 1.5 and the sf is 1.5 (1.5 x 1.5) equals 2.25 HP. So, actually, this motor pushes a little over 2hp.

Is this the best replacement motor and what other items should be replaced seals, gaskets etc. Thanks

There are a number of reasons as to why your pump may not be working very well. I would not begin replacing parts just yet but first try and pinpoint the issue. Please review the search results by clicking here for locating and or troubleshooting pool priming issues.

Hi, Don. The B2858 and the B2842 motors have the same total hp but the B2842 motor operates using fewer amps so it's considered an energy efficient version.

I am needing to replace it and I'm unsure of what Pentair motor I need. Could you please advise me.

It's most likely the bearings going bad which is part number 5270-31. If you decide to replace the motor instead I would need to know what model of Pentair pump you have. If you are not aware then you can attach a picture of your complete pump so I can identify it for you.

Good afternoon Ray, You would want to get a pump with the same service factor. This is multiplied with your hp giving you a total horse power. You want to replace with the same or as close as possible.

 Reply

A  Answered on 9/15/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Scott W.

If you have the incorrect shaft seal or if the shaft seal is not installed correctly it could cause the shaft not to turn. If the shaft spins with nothing on it, it is not the motor.

My pump is running but is very loud, and running hot. THink it's a bad bearing. Which is the best option: 1. Replace Bearings 2. Replace Motor only, and if so, which part is needed for WhisperFlow WF-26 / PN 011773 1.5 HP Model 177475. Also, would you recommend replacing the seal plate as well, since the noise does have a rhythm to it. 3. Replace the entire pump unit (not just the motor)
 Reply

A  Answered on 9/12/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Megan C.

I best recommend replacing the Motor B854 and Tune-up kit. You may need to replace the Impeller and Diffuser if you are hearing some type of rhythm. If the pump is 10-years old or greater I would invest in a new pump, the Whisperflo Pump 1 1/2 HP - WF-26 may be found by clicking here.

Hi Merle, The B854 is the correct replacement motor for your pump. You will also need to replace the Pump Shaft Seals (354545), Diffuser Gasket (355030), Housing O-ring (355619) and the Lid O-ring (357255) which can be found on the Pentair Superflo Parts page.

Replaced 177476 (doesn't show HP/SF on label) with USQ1152 shows HP of 1.5 and SF 1.1 from pool store at their recommendation. I have a WhisperFlo pump shows HP of 1.5/SF 1.47.The motor keeps overheating and shuts down. Pool store offers various reasons. Lastly they replaced motor "must be bad" New motor does same thing. In reading it seems this is the wrong pump. THP for this needs 2.2 THP not 1.65 on this pump. Is it possible this is why the motor is shutting down? Very costly-two motors now.

Also, when it first would not start up, I flipped the switch many times and it started. Worked a few days then would not start. again. Replaced DPST switch and tried. Same problem. Would the run capacitor cause the motor not to turn on? Thanks

Hi Ry, A bad capacitor can cause the problem you're experiencing. If you get us the specs off of the capacitor we can locate the correct replacement to see if that will get the motor operational again. If that does not work then you will have to replace the motor which the B858 will work.

I have a WhisperFlo WF-28. The motor is Centurion part 7-177476-20, 230/115 volts, 11.2/22.4 amps, single phase,56Y frame, type CX with no catalog number or HP rating on the motor label. The 2 HP and 1.1 SF is shown on the Pentair WF-28 model label above the motor label. An old AO Smith document shows the part number 177476 as a B858 but the Pentair specs would indicate it should be a B859. Do I currently have a full rate motor? Is this the correct replacement pump or do I need the B859?

Hi Glenn, You currently have a 2 hp up-rate motor. So you can use either the B859 (up-rate) or B858 (full-rate) motor. I would also recommend getting the Pentair/Purex Whisperflo Tune Up Kit - GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT

What is the difference between a full rate motor and one that has a service factor. Is a motor that has a service factor of 1.5 actually a smaller HP motor and the service factor bring it up to the stated HP or is it actually a bigger motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/7/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi K. Schebera, The difference between a full rate and an up rate is the service factor. Full rate motors has a higher service factor and a higher total hp than what it's rated for while up rate motor has a lower service factor and are rated at rated hp. Yes, a motor with a S.F. of 1.5  will have a higher total hp so it will be bigger.

Hi, The B858 motor will be the correct replacement motor. The B2983T will be a better option, it's a dual speed motor with controller which will cut back on operational cost by providing you with a lower speed for filtration. You can install either motor yourself.

The 355393S is an energy efficient 1.5 HP full rated motor; the correct motor replacement is the B842 made by AO Smith. The B858 would work, but it is a standard efficiency meaning it would cost more to run.

What is the difference between the SQ1152 and the B2858? I have an old pac fab challenger pump and have always bought the SQ1152 as a replacement but this seems to say that the B2858 should be used. The only real difference seems to be the frame 56Y vs 48Y. Not sure what that is. From the picture the pumps look the same. The SQ1152 is cheaper so that would be my first choice unless the B2858 is a much better pump.
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/9/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Bill the main difference between these motor is the frame as you have noted. The 56Y frame motor has a larger barrel (i.e. it is a wider motor) and the 48Y has a narrow barrel. Both motors can be used interchangeably as there is a rubber spacer which comes with the motor which allows for either type of motor to be installed on your pump. If you have been using the SQ1152 motor then I would stay with the SQ1152 motor as you won't need to worry about using the spacer. The performance of both motors would be exactly the same.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
 Reply

A  Answered on 2/16/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.
