What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I have this pump on a filter for an inground pool. It is old, 15 years or so. It seems to lose power after a short time. Can I upgrade to the 1hp? also will just a new motor give me the power back that I am looking for?

Hi Scott, You can upgrade to a larger HP but you will also need to replace your impeller with a 1 HP impeller and this should give you more flow. One other point to consider is that you want to make sure that your filter can handle the increased output of the pump. There should be a label on your filter shows the maximum flow rating the filter can handle.

Hello Mark- Yes you can use the A.O. Smith 3/4 HP Square Flange Full Rate Motor SQ1072. I also recommend purchasing the shaft seal when replacing the motor which is a HAYWARD SHAFT SEAL (OEM) - SPX2700SA.

Matt, Based on the pump model, the replacement motor would be the USQ1072. I would also recommend replacing the shaft seal when you replace the motor. We have a parts list for your pool pump here. There are 2 different shaft seals depending on the age of your pump.

Is SQ1072 energy efficient motor? How does it differ from QC1072 motor and what are the benefits of using one versus another? Both will fit my pump. Thank you.

The SQ1072 is not an energy efficient motor and the QC1072 is. It draws less amperage hence giving you slightly less of an electrical expense.

Hi. You the replacement pump seals are listed on the Sta-Rite Dura-Glas and Max-E-Glas Parts Diagram page. There is a Pre-1998 and a Post-1998 option.

I replaced my SQ1072 motor about 2 years ago. Now it is making a loud noise and I noticed the pump (PE 5D-1241) is leaking into the motor and on the ground. I plan on replacing the motor again but what can I do about the pump? Is there a rebuild kit for it thats not too complicated to do. I remember buying seals last time but didnt use most because I didnt know where they went. Is there a video for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Jane, If your pump is pre-1998 then you will require the Go-Kit-6 StaRite Pump Tune Up Kit and if your pump is from 1998 or newer then you will need the StaRite Go-Kit-54 Tune Up Kit. If you are unsure of the date of your pump then you can watch this Video on How to determine if your Sta Rite Pump is before or After 1998 which should help.

I have a Dura-Glass 3/4 HP pool pump (Mod.C48J2PA105, SN1195) and am very happy with the product, although at the end of last season the motor would groan when starting (very similar to a motor with a defective starting capacitor) looking at the motor housing externally, I see no evidence of a starter Capacitor? No signs of leaks, corrosion or any other sign of water on any exterior surface. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Thank You,

If the impeller is in good condition with no breaks, or significant wear and is the correct one for your pump and motor then you do not need to replace it.

I have ordered a new AO Smith electric motor and it looks like it comes with a water slinger already attached. Is that true or do I need two add a water slinger to the new motor? Thanks.

Don, that is correct the Century Motors A.O. Smith 3/4 HP Square Flange 48Y Full Rate Motor - SQ1072 does come with the water slinger already attached.

I am replacing an AO Smith C48K2EC11C3 1 HP motor on an irrigation well pump; the replacement listed for this motor is an SQ 1072 which is listed at .75HP. Isn't there a 1 HP replacement motor? What modifications would have to be made to the coupling assembly to mate to the present Sta Rite pump model SNE-L?

I am looking to replace my old 3/4 HP A.O. Smith motor. It is tagged as an SQ1072. Everything appears to match with the SQ1072 on your site except for the max AMPS. Will this motor be a direct replacement? Thank you

They are the same HP the new motor the one you are looking at is a 3/4 HP full rate.

Hi John, You can upgrade to 1 HP by going with this 1 HP Full Rate Motor. You would also need to replace your impeller to this 1 HP Full Rate DuraGlas Impeller. You will need this Sta-Rite Dura Glas Seal Kit Pre 1998 or this Sta-Rite Dura Glas Seal Kit 1998 and after. If you don't know if your pump is from before or after 1998 then we put together this Video on How to Determine if your Sta-Rite Pump is Before or After 1998.

Thanks for previous answer, I had purchased a new pump a few years back to replace old pump bur realized the face is not a square flange and needed new parts to work with plumping . i attached picture of new pump and existing plumbing parts. Do you sell plumbing parts to fit new pump or is it just easier to get new pump you recommended ?
Hi John, Unfortunately, it would be more expensive to try and fit a new pump housing to the round flange motor. The easiest and least expensive option would be the option I posted in the last email. Maybe throw the round flange motor up on eBay to see if you can get some $$ for it.

Hi James, No this is NOT the correct replacement motor for the motor included in your photo. You will require this Hayward 6060 Booster Pump Replacement Motor. You will also need a Hayward Booster Pump Shaft Seal when you replace your motor. When I put the model number C48D62A04 in the search bar. It came up as one that would work. Why did it show that pump? Why want the pump work? Just trying to learn!!! Thanks

Hi James, after further review, they will both work. One is the OEM with Hayward labeling and the other has Century branding. Both motors are made by Century so they are essentially the same motor.

I have a Pentair Challenger .75 HP CAT No C1305, SF 1.65, FR 56Z. What are the available replacement options? Will this Century fit? Impossible to find the Pentair.
Hello Dave. The Century SQ1072 has an identical total horsepower rating (THP) but has a different frame size, 48Y vs 56Z. This would translate to the motor barrel size being 1/2" to 3/4" smaller in diameter and the overall length being longer. The Century B2847V1 has an identical THP and frame size - 56Y. The Century B2847V1 is the better fit in this case. Century 3/4 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate Motor - B2847V1 An interesting note regarding the 56Z frame: the Z frame uses a flatted shaft end on which the impeller is secured. Please be sure the impeller on your current motor is threaded onto the shaft. A Tune-Up Kit will contain the necessary parts to complete this project. The GOKIT5 for the Challenger CHII Series, the GOKIT 73 for the CFII Series.

It would work, but we are unable to sell it to you if you live in California due to the Title 20 regulations. This V-Green 1.65 HP Square Flange 48Y Variable Speed Motor - ECM16SQU is Title 20 compliant and will also save you on your energy bill when it is set up properly. PLEASE NOTE that the variable-speed motors operate on 220 volts only and need an adapter to interface with an automation system if you have one. Let us know which model Sta-Rite pump the motor attaches to so we can recommend a new motor shaft seal or tune-up kit for a leak-free installation
