What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Can you direct me to the proper hi low switch for this motor?

Unfortunately the manufacturer does not offer the switch for the 2 speed 220v motors any longer. If you already have a 220 volt timer (on/off) you would need an Intermatic T106R to switch from high to low speed. If you do not have a timer currently you would need the T10604R which is a 220v on/off timer and a high/low timer.

How can I tell whether or not my motor is a dual or single speed?

Most dual speed motors will have a toggle switch that will allow you to adjust the motor speed to either high or low. Another way to tell if your motor is dual speed is by looking at the RPM's on the motor specifications label. If there are two RPM's listed such as: 1725/3450 then motor is dual speed. If there is only one RPM, then motor is single speed.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

Good morning James, You are looking for Capacitor, Run 370v 30 Mfd (5vr0303). They can fail do to temperature drops and unstable voltage.

Hi, Masa. The correct motor for that model pump is the Century B2853 or the Pureline PL2853. You will also need to replace the pump shaft seal and o-rings, they are listed on the Sta-Rite Max-E-Pro Pump Parts Diagram page.

I have a Purex Triton–vintage WhisperFlo pump with a Magnetek/Centurion 1.0 hp, 1.65 service factor motor that has developed a dead spot. Is it feasible to use this B982 motor on my pump to convert it to a dual-speed, or would that be incompatible with the impeller?

Hi, Mario. You can replace your single speed motor to a dual speed using this B2982 - 1 HP Dual Spd. Motor - Full Rate which will require the Dual Speed Pump Timer - T106R. The impeller will be compatible with this B2982 motor. You will also need the Whisperflo Tune Up Kit - GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

I am interested in replacing a Century B2854 pump with this dual speed unit. Would this be a drop-in replacement?
I’m trying to find a replacement pool motor as mine started whining yesterday and now it won’t move water properly. From what I can see of the pump it runs at 1.25 real horsepower and the motor at 1.9 or 1.65 depending on high speed or low. I’m interested in a single speed motor that matches my pump which is the whisperflo pictured, how should I change my setup or is this motor my only option, thank you for any help you can give me.
Hi. If the impeller that you currently using is original to the pump, you can use the PL2853 or the B2853 single speed motor. If not and it was changed to match the B982 motor, you will have to use the B2854 or PL2854. You will also need the Whisperflo Tune Up Kit - GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

If you know that you have never replaced the impeller then the original impeller used on the Whisperflo WFDS-24 would be this 1 HP Up Rate Whisperflo Impeller. If you are unsure then there should be a part # embossed into the impeller and you will need to follow these instructions on How to Replace a Pool Pump Impeller. Once you get that part # off the front of the impeller then reply back to us with the part # and we can confirm the proper items you will need.

Looking to replace the motor on a Whisperflo WFE3 wired with 230v. Would this work as a replacement and provide more suction for cleaning at full speed?
Hi Greg, If you wanted to go with a dual speed motor then you would go with this B2981 Dual Speed Motor the B2981 has the same True HP as the motor listed in your photo of 1.25 if wanted to stay with the same motor that you have now which is a single-speed motor then you would go wit this B661 Replacement Motor.

Hi Monte, yes this is a correct replacement motor for the original motor on a Pentair Whsiperflo model WFE-4.in a dual speed option however the actual original direct single-speed replacement motor is the motor model B848. Hi Jie, yes you can use this motor as a replacement for the motor part number 168454. It also is recommended to replace the seals and gaskets when replacing a motor. In order to locate those, we will need the front pump housing wet end model number or name that the motor attaches to. You can also upload images of that housing in a reply here if need be.

I have a PAcFAB challenger 1 HP 56Y single speed that failed with a mechanical timer. Can I get the dual speed motor with the manual speed switch and still use the mechanical timer?

As long as the timer is dedicated or has an option for 230V the Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2982 can wired to it to supply the on/off power to the motor and wire the Toggle Switch and Canopy Kit for 56Y 2-Speed - 2512558-001 wires for high/low only. Please make sure you replace the Pump Shaft Seal 5/8" - PSR-200 for chlorine pools and or the Pump Shaft Seal Heavy Duty (Saltwater Pools) - PS-3867

Hello, I have a, Pentair Whisperflo Pump 1Hp 230V 2-Speed Wfds-4 (011486). (see pic) Worked Perfectly for 9 -10 years. Motor started sounding 'Different' and louder. I want to replace the MOTOR only. (see pic)I want to conecting new motor to my control/timer box (see pic) same as is current, so I am able to use pump on Hi, for cleannig, then running everday on 'Low' normaly a Very Quiet motor. Looking for a MOTOR that is compatible with both electric and pump side of conections. And QUIET : )

Do I need to replace the seals and if so what do I need?
Hello Michael. It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser o-ring be replaced concurrent with the new motor. These parts are specific to the manufacturer/model of the pump, not the motor. Please provide pump manufacturer/model information and a recommendation can be made. If the pump label is no longer visible, please provide several photos of the entire pump inclusive of the intake and discharge plumbing which will assist in identification. The photos provided would point to a Pentair Pool Products Pool Pump but nothing that would indicate the specific model.

Thank you, that is the Whisperflo. You will need the B2982 with Whisperflo - GOKIT32 or Whisperflo Saltwater - GOKIT32SALT for salt pools. The Clear RTV Silicone 6558-0 (For gluing shaft seal into the seal plate) will be needed too if you do not have some already. On my previous pump, I had 3 connectors so I have two red wires and one black wire. On this pump, I see A, L1 and L2. How should I wire this pump? Should I leave one red line not connected?

Hi Kurtis. If you’re not familiar with wiring diagrams, it can seem like another language. One of the wires should be "hot" all of the time, one should be "hot" when on low speed and one should be "hot" when on high speed. Take a look at the wiring diagram on the motor label to see where each wire should go and take a look at our wiring diagram here to help you. Your motor label will show you which terminals get the LOW speed, HIGH speed and COMMON wires go. You may need to look where the wires originate from to find out which goes where. We recommend referring the task to a qualified electrician if you are uncomfortable completing it.

My EcoPump EP-2 two speed stops shortly after starting. Took EcoPump apart, Found one bearing burnt and
motor showing some rust. The motor is a Century Two Speed Cat B2980, .75/.10 hp, Amps SF 5.8/0.9.
I see you no longer offer the B2980. Is the B2982 a capable replacement?
Hello Robert. The Century Motors 1.0 HP Dual Speed Full Rate Motor model B2982 is a compatible replacement for the Century Motors model B2980. The B2982 will provide a slight increase in total horsepower over the B2980.

I have a B980 on a Jandy FHPM 1.0-2 Is the B2982 the replacement? If so what are to seal PN# that need replaced?
Hello Rob, unfortunately we do not carry a direct replacement for your model motor however we do carry a 115 volt option being the B981(which you would have to change your breaker to 115/120volt) or you can use the variable speed motor model ECM16SQU. Also the seals that you will need are part numbers 5020-087, and 5020-041.

I have a Sta-rite Dura-glass pump model # 5E-99L, also on the pump label appears the number, E79T. I need a new motor. The old motor was 1.0 HP, A.O. Smith Century Centurion, Cat # B842, Part# 7 165199-05, 56Y frame. I live in Southern California and am having difficulty finding a replacement. Hi John, the dual speed replacement motor model for your current model is the B2983( please see the product details for the dual speed switch) and the variable speed model(which is currently out of stock) is the ECM27SQU.
